ORKIESTRA ROZRYWKOWA POLSKIEGO RADIA I TELEWIZJI W KATOWICACH - conducted by Jerzy Milian

The Polish Radio and Television Orchestra of Popular Music, in Katowice, was first formed in January 1974, having 24 members, of which 17 are instrumentalists and 7 are vocalists. Founded on the initiative of Jerzy Milian, it gives young people a chance to perform, the average age of the group being 25 years of age. A large number of the members were recruited among graduates of the Department of Popular Music of the P.W.S.M. in Katowice. The orchestra made its debut in Polish Radio only a few weeks after rehearsals, and in front of the public in only a few months after formation. The group's recordings show a high standard of technique by all group members, especially by those in the brass and vocal sections. The orchestra has managed to achieve a very characteristic and original sound by having a much smaller brass section than is common in most similar or big-band orchestras. Together with its very characteristic "Silesian sound", the group's success lies in its very varied musical arrangements, which are an interweaving of elements of very diverse types of music, and presented in a very dynamic and articulated form.
It appears that the musicians in the orchestra under the direction of Milian use in very apt musical proportions, the very diverse types of musical tendences of contemporary popular music. Already such singers as Irena Jarocka, Andrzej Dabrowski, Krystyna Pronko, Anna German, Zbigniew Wodecki and Mieczyslaw
Swiecicki, have been recording with this orchestra. It is also the group's aim to back talented young performers. They work together with young composers from Katowice, such as, Witold Ciechanowicz, Witold Gernand, Jerzy Jarosik, Piotr Kaluzny, Andrzej Margiciok, Piotr Piber, Piotr Sikora. The originator and conductor of the orchestra needs no further introduction. As a vibraphone virtuoso and the leading Polish jazz artist he has already performed and recorded many times in Poland and abroad. Recently he has devoted himself to composing and is already a writer of many interesting pieces. Such varied talents as those of Jerzy Milian, and the talent and enthusiasm of the young musicians allow us to await in anticipation, many interesting and valuable achievements in the field of popular music.
